Why Is Delta Air Lines Removing the Basic Economy Category?

Before you panic, know that the fare itself is not going away. What’s being eliminated is the category name. The Basic Economy fare will be reintroduced as part of a new class under a brand refresh, aimed at offering customers greater flexibility and personalization.

What Are the Changes at Delta Air Lines?

Starting May 15, for travel on or after October 1, Delta will offer customers a new combination of products and experiences designed to give them more options and control over their journey. Delta’s seat products will now be classified under the following categories:

  • Delta Main (formerly Main Cabin)
  • Delta Comfort (formerly Delta Comfort+)
  • Delta First (formerly First Class)
  • Delta Premium Select
  • Delta One

Additionally, customers will no longer see the “Basic Economy” label. Instead, this fare level has been integrated into Delta Main, which now includes three tiers:

  • Delta Main Basic (formerly Basic Economy): The most affordable fare, offering essential services similar to the original Basic Economy. You’ll get the Delta experience with some limitations—seat assigned after check-in, Zone 8 boarding, cancellation for partial eCredit, no Sky Club access, and no miles or MQD accumulation.
  • Delta Main Classic: Includes MQDs, 5 miles per dollar spent, eCredit for cancellations, better boarding priority, same-day standby options, and greater seat selection flexibility.
  • Delta Main Extra: Offers higher boarding priority, 7 base miles per dollar, easy refunds to original payment method, and same-day standby access—just like the Classic option, with added benefits.

“As we listen and learn about what our customers want when it comes to their travel, we know that clarity and choice are paramount,” said Eric Phillips, S.V.P. and Chief Digital Officer. “Our reimagined shopping experience gives customers more options and flexibility to pick the travel experience that works best for them, and a full picture of all the benefits of flying with Delta.”

What Kind of Aircraft Does Delta Air Lines Use?

Delta uses wide-body aircraft mainly for long-haul routes to Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and South America. The Airbus A330 and Boeing 767 primarily operate transatlantic flights to Europe, offering comfort and efficiency for extended journeys. Meanwhile, the modern Airbus A350 is used on routes to Asia and Oceania, where greater range and advanced technology are required.

This strategy allows Delta to optimize its fleet based on regional demands, ensuring a strong and competitive international service in key markets worldwide.

On most connections, passengers are allowed one checked bag weighing up to 23 kg (50 lbs), with maximum total dimensions (length + width + height) of 157 cm (62 inches). This policy typically applies to both domestic and international flights, depending on the fare purchased.
