Biography of Saúl Canelo Álvarez
Saúl Canelo Álvarez was born on July 18, 1990, in San Agustín, a community on the outskirts of Guadalajara, Jalisco. From a young age, his father instilled a strong work ethic in him, while his brother Rigoberto sparked his passion for boxing by giving him his first gloves at just 10 years old. While helping his father sell popsicles on the streets of Juanacatlán and serving fresh drinks in the mornings, Canelo dreamed of becoming a professional boxer. In the afternoons, he trained tirelessly at José “Chepo” Reynoso’s gym.
As a child, Saúl faced teasing and nicknames due to his appearance, and it was one of these nicknames, El Canelo, that would later become synonymous with success and resilience. At 15, he made his professional debut on October 29, 2005, at the Arena Chololo Larios in Tonalá, winning by technical knockout in the fourth round against Abraham González, showing early signs of his talent.
From his early fights, he faced opponents who were much stronger and older, yet he persevered. By 2006, just a year after his debut, he became Jalisco’s middleweight champion.
