A mass shooting at a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper sent shockwaves across New York City on the evening of July 28, 2025. The shoooter, now identified as Shane Devon Tamura, took the lives of four people — including two NYPD officers — before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. As the city mourns and investigators seek answers, public interest around the suspect has intensified, with the name Shane Devon Tamura quickly trending across search engines and social media.

Who is Shane Devon Tamura, the man behind the Park Avenue shooting?

Shane Devon Tamura was a 27-year-old from Las Vegas with a documented history of mental illness, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Authorities say Tamura arrived in New York City just hours before launching his deadly assault at 345 Park Avenue, a luxury 44-story building that houses major corporate offices such as Blackstone, the NFL, and KPMG.

“His motives are still under investigation. We are working to understand why he targeted this particular location,” Tisch stated.

Tamura previously worked as a casino security guard in Las Vegas. He had a valid concealed firearms permit issued in 2022, and an expired private investigator’s license. NYPD officials also noted that he had a “documented mental health history,” though specific diagnoses have not been released.

As a teenager, Tamura had been a standout running back for Granada Hills Charter High School in California. In a local news interview, he appeared soft-spoken while discussing touchdowns scored during a game.

What happened during the shooting at 345 Park Avenue in NYC?

At approximately 6:30 p.m., Tamura double-parked a car with Nevada plates outside the building. Carrying an assault rifle in plain sight, he calmly entered the lobby of 345 Park Avenue and opened fire. Surveillance footage showed him walking into the building just as the evening rush began.

He fatally shot two civilians and one police officer on the lower levels. Then, he ascended to the 33rd floor, where he shot another victim before turning the weapon on himself. One additional person was wounded, and four others suffered minor injuries during the chaos.

“I was at work and this guy came in with an assault rifle and started shooting,” said a witness who had been in the lobby.

Authorities confirmed that the weapon used was a .223-caliber AR-15-style rifle from Palmetto State Armory, which retails for around $420. Upon searching his vehicle, police found:

  • A rifle case with ammunition
  • A loaded revolver
  • Extra magazines and rounds
  • A backpack
  • Prescribed medications

How did Tamura travel from Las Vegas to Manhattan before the attack?

Investigators tracked Tamura’s cross-country journey using surveillance and traffic data. His car was recorded in:

  • Colorado on July 26
  • Nebraska and Iowa on July 27
  • Columbia, New Jersey at 4:24 p.m. on July 28

He entered Manhattan shortly after and launched the shooting soon thereafter.

Why is 345 Park Avenue a significant NYC location?

The skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue is home to prominent businesses and organizations, including:

  • Blackstone, a leading global investment firm
  • NFL headquarters
  • KPMG, one of the “Big Four” accounting firms
  • Rudin Management, the building’s owner

Its proximity to landmarks like Grand Central and the Museum of Modern Art adds to its high-profile status.
