Coming soon, the Netflix platform will showcase one of the darkest chapters in U.S. history: the crimes committed by Ed Gein, a serial killer who inspired other criminals attempting to replicate his twisted murders. This is the story of the ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story’ series. But who exactly was this serial killer, and why does his name send chills down the spine of anyone familiar with his story? We’ll tell you all about it.
Who Was Ed Gein?
As the title suggests, the series tells the true story of Ed Gein, a killer and cannibal obsessed with horrific crimes. His gruesome actions inspired several classic horror films, such as The Silence of the Lambs, Psycho, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
From his childhood, Ed Gein was marked by loneliness. Those who knew him described him as shy and peculiar, suffering from uncontrollable laughing fits and a noticeable inability to socialize. His mother, a religious fanatic, instilled in him a distorted view of the world, teaching him that women were evil and alcohol was the work of the devil.

The first clue to Ed’s dark side came with the mysterious death of his brother Henry, who, after an accident on the farm, was found dead in a swamp. Although there were initially no conclusive proof, Ed became a suspect. Over time, his obsession with violence and cannibalism emerged, leading him to commit horrific murders.
When discovered, authorities found human parts and macabre objects made from the remains in his home. Despite the overwhelming evidence, he was only tried for the murder of one woman and, diagnosed with schizophrenia, spent the rest of his life in a psychiatric hospital until his death in 1984.
