When is the 2025 Summer Solstice?
The summer solstice in 2025 falls on Friday, June 20.
What is the Summer Solstice?
The summer solstice happens because the Earth’s rotational axis is tilted 23.4 degrees relative to the Sun. This tilt causes different parts of the planet to receive varying amounts of sunlight as Earth orbits the Sun.
During the summer solstice, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun more than at any other time, resulting in its longest day and shortest night of the year. Meanwhile, the Southern Hemisphere experiences the opposite: its longest night and shortest day.

How Do Americans Celebrate Summer?
In summer, Americans take advantage of sunny days with numerous outdoor activities. Barbecues and picnics are among the most popular. Families and friends gather in backyards, parks, or green spaces for grilled food, outdoor games, and quality time in the sun. This tradition highlights a love of the outdoors and a strong sense of community.
Four National Holidays in the Summer Season:
- Memorial Day: Honors U.S. Armed Forces members who died in combat. Observed on the last Monday of May, it also marks the unofficial start of summer.
- Juneteenth: Named for June 19, the day in 1865 when slavery effectively ended in the United States. Officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.
- Independence Day: Celebrated on July 4, marking the 1776 Declaration of Independence from Britain. Traditions include parades, family gatherings, and fireworks.
- Labor Day: Commemorates the contributions of American workers. Celebrated on the first Monday in September, it’s seen as the unofficial end of summer with parades, barbecues, and outdoor events.
