When is Father’s Day celebrated in the United States?
Father’s Day is celebrated every year on the third Sunday of June. In 2025, it will be observed on June 15.
Origin of Father’s Day
Father’s Day has an interesting origin, with two stories claiming its creation. One of the most well-known versions dates back to 1909 in Spokane, Washington. Sonora Smart Dodd, after listening to a Mother’s Day sermon, reflected on the important role her own father, William Jackson Smart, had played in her life. He was a Civil War veteran who raised his six children alone after his wife died during childbirth in 1898. Moved by her father’s dedication, Dodd proposed a special day to honor fathers, initially choosing June 5, his birthday. Although her proposal was well received, the official celebration took place on June 19, 1910.

The other version comes from Fairmont, West Virginia. In 1908, after a tragic mining accident claimed the lives of 361 men, Grace Golden Clayton suggested holding a religious service to honor fathers. Although her gesture was meaningful, it did not gain the same momentum as Dodd’s campaign.
Over time, the idea of celebrating fathers grew in popularity, especially during the Great Depression, when retailers saw it as a chance to boost sales. World War II also helped solidify the holiday, as people were eager to honor fathers serving overseas.
Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson officially declared the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day in the United States. Years later, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law making it a permanent national holiday. Today, this celebration continues to be an important occasion to recognize the dedication and love of fathers around the world.
