Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez Biography

Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez was born on July 18, 1990, in San Agustín, a community near Guadalajara, Jalisco. From an early age, his father instilled in him a strong work ethic, and his brother Rigoberto inspired his love for boxing by giving him his first pair of gloves at just 10 years old. While helping his father sell popsicles in Juanacatlán and serving aguas frescas in the mornings, Canelo dreamed of becoming a professional boxer. In the afternoons, he trained tirelessly at José “Chepo” Reynoso’s gym.

As a child, Saúl was teased for his physical appearance and received the nickname El Canelo, which he later turned into a symbol of success and resilience. At 15, he made his professional debut on October 29, 2005, at the Arena Chololo Larios in Tonalá, where he defeated Abraham González by technical knockout in the fourth round—an early glimpse of the talent that would lead him to boxing greatness.

From his first fights, he faced opponents who were older and stronger. Nevertheless, by 2006, just a year after his debut, he had already become the middleweight champion of the state of Jalisco.

His second loss also occurred in Las Vegas, on May 7, 2022, at the T-Mobile Arena, where Russian fighter Dmitry Bivol beat him by unanimous decision with scorecards of 115-113.
