The History of Whataburger
Whataburger was created by Harmon Dobson in 1950 on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi, Texas, with a clear goal: to offer a burger so big it would require two hands to hold, and so tasty that customers would exclaim, “What a burger!” He succeeded, turning that small burger stand into a true legend that has captivated Texas and the southern United States.
Headquartered in San Antonio, the chain has maintained its essence while growing, reaching annual revenues of over $4 billion and expanding its presence to 16 states with more than 1,090 restaurants.
Throughout its more than 70 years, Whataburger has grown an impressive following thanks to its unique features, such as its famous burgers, diverse menu, recognizable orange-and-white striped restaurants, and its iconic Fancy Ketchup.
Despite having an exceptional menu, the company knows that its greatest strength is the people who make up Whataburger. That’s why it was listed in the QSR magazine’s 2023 list of Best Brands to Work For and continues to receive awards for its excellent workplace culture, such as the 2023 Top Workplaces recognition.
