What’s the true story behind The Conjuring 4?
The Conjuring 4: Last Rites is based on a true story experienced by the Smurl family. In the 1970s, this American family moved into an old duplex in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. Everything seemed normal until, 18 months later, the first signs of paranormal activity began to appear in the house.

There were strange noises and unpleasant smells, the TV and radio would turn on by themselves, pipes began leaking for no apparent reason, and scratch marks appeared on the doors. But this was just the beginning.
The couple, Janet and Jack, claimed that an evil force had attempted to sexually assault them. Fearing the worst for their children, they sought professional help, eventually meeting Ed and Lorraine Warren, the well-known paranormal investigators who had already dealt with several demonic possession cases.
Although they had been focusing on lecturing only, the Warrens came out of retirement to help the family. Upon inspecting the house, Lorraine discovered it was inhabited by four spirits: an old woman, a young girl, a man who had died there, and a demon using the other three to destroy the family.
The Warrens began the rituals to drive the demon away, but they were unsuccessful—this was the only case they couldn’t solve. Years later, the Smurl family decided to leave the house, but the demon followed them to their new home. It is said they were finally freed after an exorcism in 1989.
