Is The Waterfront inspired by real events?
Yes, though it includes fictional elements. Kevin Williamson, the creator of the series, revealed that the plot is deeply influenced by his own family history. Coming from a fishing family, he said he witnessed firsthand the crisis that hit the fishing industry in the 1980s. His father couldn’t feed the family until someone appeared with an offer to make big money… and it was hard to say no.
Williamson shared that his father ended up involved in illegal activities, specifically drug trafficking. Drawing on that past, the series centers on a hardworking man, a patriarch willing to do whatever it takes to protect those he loves. According to Williamson, it’s about a family that pulled itself up through hard work and built a small fishing empire in its community.
