
Samsung Electronics has officially unveiled Micro RGB, its new micro-scale backlight technology for smart TVs and ultra-premium televisions, debuting with a 115-inch model aimed at setting a new standard in color accuracy, contrast, and visual immersion. First showcased at CES 2025, this launch marks the arrival of the world’s first display with RGB backlighting composed of red, green, and blue micro LEDs measuring less than 100 µm, positioning itself as a key evolution over Mini LED and MicroLED technologies in the global display market.

What is Samsung’s Micro RGB technology?
The Micro RGB technology is based on a Samsung-patented system that arranges red, green, and blue micro LEDs —each under 100 µm— in an ultra-thin pattern with individual control behind the panel. Unlike conventional backlighting, which typically uses white or blue LEDs, this method allows each RGB LED’s intensity to be adjusted independently, achieving a high level of precision.
“Samsung’s Micro RGB achieves unprecedented precision in RGB LED control at the micrometer scale, raising the bar for color accuracy and contrast in consumer displays,” said Taeyong Son, Executive Vice President and Head of the R\&D team at Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display (VD) Division.

How does it compare to the competition?
Samsung is not the only brand exploring this Mini LED evolution. Sony introduced its “General RGB LED Backlight Technology,” and Hisense announced its 116-inch TriChroma LED TV with independent RGB LED control. However, while Hisense’s offering reaches 97% of the BT.2020 standard, Samsung claims its Micro RGB achieves 100%, positioning it as one of the most accurate options for color reproduction on the market.
