Trader Joe’s has issued a recall for its basil due to a salmonella outbreak that has already impacted several states, with at least one person hospitalized. The FDA and CDC are currently investigating the outbreak, which has been traced back to Infinite Herbs-brand organic basil in 2.5-oz clamshell packaging, sold between February 1 and April 6, 2024.

Trader Joe’s recall April 2024. Details of the Outbreak and Response

The recall affects Trader Joe’s stores across 29 states, including major states like Florida, New Jersey, and Wisconsin.

So far, twelve people from seven different states have reported illnesses linked to this product, with a significant number of these cases confirming purchase of the contaminated basil from Trader Joe’s locations. Grego Berliavsky, CEO of Infinite Herbs, expressed deep regret over the incident, emphasizing the company’s commitment to consumer safety and resolving the issue.

“Your health and safety are our top priorities, and we take matters like these very seriously. According to the CDC, 12 illnesses are associated with this recall to date. I am heartbroken at the thought that any item we sold may have caused illness or discomfort. We simply will not rest until we can once again be confident in the safety of this product”, he said.

Impact and Safety Measures

Trader Joe’s has proactively removed the affected product from shelves and has ceased receiving supplies from the implicated farm, which is no longer producing the basil. Berliavsky highlighted that while fresh basil typically expires within a week, those who may have frozen the herb should be particularly cautious and refrain from using it.

Ongoing Investigation and Consumer Advice

The FDA continues to investigate the source of the contamination and whether other products might be connected to the outbreak. Consumers who have purchased the recalled basil are advised to either discard it or return it to any Trader Joe’s store for a full refund. For additional information or concerns, customers can contact Trader Joe’s directly at (626)-599-3817 or via email.
