When will Torrid stores close?

The 180 store closures will take place before the end of 2025.

Why is Torrid closing its stores?

In its Q1 2025 earnings report, the company stated that it aims to optimize customer engagement across multiple channels and is working to provide a smoother and more efficient shopping experience. Torrid says this will position the brand for more efficient and accelerated revenue and profit growth, helping it remain resilient in the future.

The brand also plans to invest in areas that drive long-term growth. In this context, closing underperforming stores will allow it to reduce fixed costs.

Torrid executives also noted that the digital channel remains the preferred choice for their customers, now accounting for nearly 70% of total demand. As a result, the company is accelerating its transformation into a more digitally focused business, which includes optimizing its physical retail presence.

Torrid’s History

Torrid Holdings Inc. is a well-known American retail chain specializing in plus-size women’s fashion, offering sizes from 10 to 30. Originally part of Hot Topic, the brand was spun off in 2015 to operate independently as Torrid, LLC, although both companies remain under the ownership of private equity firm Sycamore Partners.

The first Torrid store opened in April 2001 at the Brea Mall in Brea, California. Since then, the brand has significantly expanded throughout the U.S. and Canada. Its first international location opened in Toronto, Canada, in August 2015. In July 2021, Torrid made a major move by going public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol CURV.

However, in June 2025, the company announced a significant strategic shift: the closure of approximately 180 stores, or about 30% of its retail network. This decision was driven by several factors, including the expiration of a large portion of its store leases this year. Additionally, Q1 2025 results showed a clear trend toward e-commerce, with over 60% of sales made online. This transformation reflects Torrid’s focus on adapting to new consumer behaviors and strengthening its digital presence in the competitive plus-size fashion market.
