Netflix has unveiled another visual preview of one of its most ambitious cinematic bets for 2025: Frankenstein, the reinterpretation of the gothic classic directed by acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. The streaming platform has released new images of this long-awaited production, sparking a frenzy among genre fans and followers of the Oscar-winning director.

Guillermo del Toro has made it clear that his version of Frankenstein 2025 is not intended to replicate or directly pay tribute to previous portrayals. In statements to Vanity Fair, the director explained: “(Boris) Karloff looms eternally. Bernie (Wrightson) looms eternally. But we didn’t make Karloff or Bernie, and we weren’t going to make Mary (Shelley) either”, making it clear that this adaptation departs from both the iconic Karloff interpretation and Wrightson’s comic illustrations, as well as Shelley’s foundational text.

For Del Toro, these influences are more personal than imitable: “Mary Shelley and Bernie Wrightson and Karloff are as important to me as my father and mother. They gave light to what I am”, he confessed, revealing the emotional bond he maintains with the cultural pillars of this tale.

What do the characters look like in this Frankenstein 2025 adaptation?

Thanks to an exclusive from Vanity Fair, we finally get to see what the creature will look like in this Netflix-produced version. Jacob Elordi, known for his roles in Euphoria and Saltburn, plays Frankenstein’s Monster. The new images show the actor in makeup that renders him nearly unrecognizable, completely departing from his usual on-screen allure to portray a more emaciated and somber figure, true to the gothic aesthetic of the film.

Frankenstein 2025 cast

Oscar Isaac portrays the tormented Dr. Victor Frankenstein. The images also feature Mia Goth as Elizabeth Lavenza, the doctor’s fiancée — a role that seems to build on her reputation as a modern horror muse following her work in Ti West’s X trilogy.

The cast is rounded out by Christoph Waltz as Dr. Pretorious, David Bradley as the blind man, Christian Convery as young Victor, and other prominent names including Charles Dance, Lars Mikkelsen, Felix Kammerer, and Ralph Ineson.

How long is Frankenstein 2025?

Set in 19th-century Eastern Europe, the film follows Dr. Pretorious (played by Christoph Waltz), who seeks Frankenstein’s creature to continue the late Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s disturbing experiments.

Netflix has described the project as a gothic American horror film, with a runtime of 2 hours and 29 minutes. The story is based not only on Mary Shelley’s original 1818 novel, but also pays homage to the 1931 film adaptation and its sequel Bride of Frankenstein.

What narrative approach does Guillermo del Toro bring to Frankenstein 2025?

This won’t be a conventional horror movie. According to Del Toro himself, this version will be an emotional exploration of fatherhood, loneliness, and the human condition. The director has described the film as his most intimate and personal project, nurtured over the years and considered by many as his creative “holy grail.”

Following the success of Pinocchio, also for Netflix, Del Toro seems set to once again elevate a classic tale into a more philosophical and emotional realm, while remaining faithful to his dark, baroque, and deeply human visual style.

Principal photography for Frankenstein began on February 12, 2024, in Toronto and officially wrapped on September 30 of the same year. Additional filming also took place along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile in September.

When does Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein premiere on Netflix?

Although Netflix has not yet announced an exact release date, the film is confirmed to be available in November 2025. All signs indicate that the platform plans to release it during the fall season, taking advantage of the Halloween and Day of the Dead celebrations.
