History of Sweetgreen
Sweetgreen was founded in 2007 thanks to the initiative of three Georgetown University students: Nicolas Jammet, Jonathan Neman, and Nathaniel Ru. Brought together by their interest in healthy eating, they set out to create a fast-casual restaurant offering tasty and nutritious meals made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Their goal was to transform the way people eat out, combining convenience with quality and a commitment to sustainability. They opened their first location in Washington, D.C., marking the beginning of what would become a revolution in the fast-food industry.

Since then, Sweetgreen has experienced significant growth while staying true to its original mission. The brand has built a community of customers who value both flavor and the positive impact of their food choices. The company’s commitment to local farmers and transparency in its supply chain has strengthened its reputation as a leader in conscious eating. What began as a college idea has evolved into a movement that promotes healthy habits on a large scale, positioning Sweetgreen as a pioneer in the healthy fast-food sector.
How many Sweetgreen restaurants are there in the United States?
Currently, the company has 249 locations across 22 U.S. states. It operates solely through company-owned stores and does not offer franchises. Its headquarters is located in New York City, where it has 42 locations. Additionally, it has a strong presence in the Tri-State area — which includes New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut — with a total of 52 locations. This strategy allows Sweetgreen to maintain direct control over quality and the customer experience at each restaurant.
