History of Subway

In 1965, Fred DeLuca dreamed of becoming a doctor. To finance his education, with an initial loan of $1,000, his friend, Dr. Peter Buck, suggested opening a submarine sandwich shop, which started a partnership that would transform the fast food industry.

The first location opened in August 1965 in BridgeportConnecticut. Their goal was to open 32 restaurants in a decade. As time passed, Fred gained business management knowledge, learning the importance of offering high-quality products, providing excellent customer service, maintaining low operating costs, and choosing the best locations for their stores.

By 1974, Fred and Peter owned and managed 16 sandwich shops in Connecticut. Realizing they wouldn’t meet their goal of 32 locations, they decided to begin franchising and launched the Subway brand, starting a remarkable expansion period that continues today. Subway has since become the largest submarine sandwich chain in the world, with over 40,000 locations.
