History of Sonic Drive-In
Troy Smith was born and raised in rural Oklahoma during the Great Depression, where he worked various jobs, including milk delivery, oil field labor, and as a mechanic. However, he was always looking for new opportunities to advance in life. In 1948, he and his wife Dollie moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma, and opened their first restaurant, the Cottage Café.

Over the years, he managed several other establishments, but it was in the small root beer stand with a drive-in that he operated alongside his restaurant, The Log House, where he discovered the most profitable business. In 1953, he decided to focus on the drive-in, which he named Top Hat, marking the beginning of what would eventually become Sonic.
Charlie Pappe, a businessman from Woodward, Oklahoma, with an interest in the restaurant industry, visited the Top Hat drive-in in 1956 while traveling through Shawnee. Impressed by the business, he contacted Troy Smith, and together they decided to collaborate to expand the restaurant. After opening three more Top Hat locations, they realized they couldn’t continue growing under that name due to copyright issues.
Taking advantage of the slogan “Service at the speed of sound,” they changed the drive-in’s name to Sonic. During the 1950s and 1960s, the Sonic brand experienced significant growth, with Smith and Pappe making deals with local entrepreneurs in the open market to expand the chain.
