Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Primary causes must be eliminated
The first to speak at the press conference was Russian President Vladimir Putin, who stressed the need to replace the current confrontation between Moscow and Washington with constructive dialogue, with particular emphasis on resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
“It is evident that sooner or later we must change the situation from confrontation to dialogue,” Putin stated, emphasizing that the personal meeting with President Donald Trump “should have happened a long time ago.”
The Russian leader recalled the shared historical ties between the two countries, from their geographic proximity across the Bering Strait to military cooperation during World War II. According to Putin, these connections could serve as the foundation for restoring pragmatic and mutually beneficial relations.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Putin said that “for the agreement to be lasting and long-term, the primary causes of this conflict must be eliminated,” and that Ukraine’s security “must be guaranteed.” He assured that both he and Trump share the willingness to move toward an understanding that would end the crisis.
Putin noted that if they follow the path agreed upon with Trump, “we can bring the Ukrainian conflict to an end” and restore productive cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, space exploration, and Arctic security.
Russia-Ukraine: Meeting with Putin was very productive, says Trump
For his part, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had made progress in talks regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict after holding a meeting he described as “very deep” and “the most productive” he has had in years with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During his remarks, Trump stated that there are “many possibilities” for reaching an agreement to end the war, although he acknowledged that “a couple of major issues” still need to be resolved, one of them “probably the most relevant” to resolving the conflict.
Trump highlighted his “fantastic relationship” with Putin, recalling previous encounters that were both tough and productive, and noted that past negotiations were hindered by what he referred to as “the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax.”
He also expressed his intention to reach out to NATO leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to follow up on the progress made.
Donald Trump said the goal is to prevent further loss of life, stating that “5, 6, or 7 thousand lives a week” could be saved if an agreement is reached. “Very soon we will talk, and surely we will meet again,” he told Putin, leaving the door open for another meeting in Moscow.
