Why is National Donut Day celebrated?

National Donut Day has historical roots dating back to World War I. It was first celebrated in 1938, inspired by the kind gesture of military doctor Morgan Pett. On his first day at a military base, Pett bought eight dozen donuts and handed one to each wounded soldier. His act of kindness moved Lieutenant General Samuel Geary, who launched a fundraising campaign to help Pett continue his donut giveaways.

The campaign was supported by the Salvation Army, which saw the need to create recreational spaces for soldiers. As a result, 250 volunteers were sent to France to build huts that served donuts, coffee, and comfort. These huts quickly became essential gathering places for troops.

Most volunteers working in these huts were women, affectionately nicknamed “Doughnut Dollies.” In honor of their support and the soldiers they served, the U.S. established National Donut Day, which continues today as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army.

The origin of the donut

Though the true origins of the donut remain unclear, its popularity and signature shape began to take form in the U.S. around the mid-19th century. One well-known story credits Elizabeth Gregory, the mother of a New England ship captain, with making fried dough treats for her son Hanson Gregory and his crew.

These treats were practical for sea voyages and believed to help prevent illnesses like scurvy. To ensure even cooking, Elizabeth placed nuts in the center of the dough, giving rise to the original term “doughnuts.” According to legend, it was Hanson himself who, frustrated with raw centers, used a pepper tin to punch a hole in the middle — giving birth to the donut’s iconic shape.

Donuts didn’t achieve mass appeal until the 1920s, when Adolph Levitt invented a machine that could produce them on a large scale. His invention transformed the market, and by 1934, donuts were a major attraction at the Chicago World’s Fair, capturing the hearts — and taste buds — of people around the world.
