How Codex Works
Codex operates using codex-1, a specialized version of the OpenAI o3 model, designed specifically for software engineering tasks. You can access this tool from the ChatGPT sidebar and assign it coding tasks by writing a request and selecting the “Code” option. If you need it to analyze or help with your codebase, you can do so using the “Ask” button.

Each task runs in an isolated, dedicated environment that is preloaded with your code base. Within this environment, Codex can read and modify files, as well as execute commands such as automated tests, linters, or type-checking tools. Execution time varies between 1 and 30 minutes depending on the complexity of the task. You can also track the progress of each assigned task in real time.
Once a task is completed, it saves the changes in its workspace and provides verifiable evidence of the work done, including terminal logs and test results. This enables clear traceability of each step. Afterwards, you can review the results, request modifications, generate a pull request on GitHub, or apply the changes directly to your local environment. You can also adjust Codex’s environment to closely match your usual development setup.
This assistant can also be guided by AGENTS.md files in your repository. These files, similar to a README.md, tell it how to interact with the code, run tests, and follow the project’s best practices. Like any developer, Codex performs best in well-configured environments with reliable tests and clear documentation.

The tool is available starting today for ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, and Team users worldwide, and will soon be compatible with Plus and Edu.
