Jordan Brand and Nike have launched their new footwear collection El Vuelo, a proposal that celebrates the rich tradition of Mexican wrestling and aims to create a powerful bond between sneaker fans and those passionate about this iconic national sport. This exclusive line includes special versions of the Air Jordan 3 Retro and the Jordan Brand Spizike Low, both filled with design details that pay tribute to the courage, strategy, and transformation of Mexican wrestlers.

Why did Nike draw inspiration from wrestling for its Air collection?

The choice of wrestling as the creative axis for this collection is no coincidence. The name El Vuelo refers to the spirit and strength of luchadores as they launch themselves into the air—a gesture that directly recalls the unforgettable flight moments of Michael Jordan, when he seemed to defy gravity.

Additionally, the wrestler’s mask, a fundamental icon of Mexican wrestling, serves as inspiration for the silhouettes, representing identity, bravery, and transformation. This aesthetic and conceptual connection between Jordan’s legacy and lucha libre makes El Vuelo a collection full of meaning.

What models are included in Nike’s El Vuelo collection?

The collection is composed of two main models:

Air Jordan 3 Retro El Vuelo

This flagship model features a new interpretation of the legendary Elephant Print, incorporating unique details inspired by eagle wings and geometric shapes that adorn wrestlers’ masks.

The golden Jumpman accents pay homage to the boots worn by luchadores during the so-called golden era of lucha libre in the 1950s and 60s. Additionally, the red and green touches on the sides, toe, and heel evoke the colors of the Mexican flag.

On the tongue, a phrase in Spanish stands out: “más vale maña que fuerza”, a popular saying among wrestling fans that celebrates wit over brute strength.

Jordan Brand Spizike Low El Vuelo

This model features a crackled texture that mimics rattlesnake skin, alluding to the fierce personas behind the masks. The design blends the legacy of Jordan Brand with the rich tradition of wrestling, projecting an image of cultural pride and athletic excellence.

What is the packaging like for the El Vuelo sneakers?

The packaging also plays a key role in the collection’s narrative. The boxes are inspired by the colorful and eye-catching wrestling posters seen throughout the streets of Mexico City. With iconic phrases and an explosion of vibrant colors, the design pays homage to the charisma and intelligence of the luchadores.

In addition, the box design features the legendary jersey numbers of Michael Jordan, 23 and 45, reinforcing the connection between the athlete and the wrestler.

What is Nike’s relationship with Mexican culture?

The launch of El Vuelo is part of Jordan Brand and Nike’s ongoing effort to connect with Latin American cultures. Other previous collaborations that celebrate Mexican traditions include:

  • Air Jordan V El Grito
  • Jordan Chilango apparel collection
  • Several editions of the Air Jordan 1 in Nike’s Día de Muertos collections

In 2024, Nike and Jordan Brand further solidified this commitment with the opening of Nike & Jordan World of Flight Mexico City, the first Jordan World of Flight space in Latin America and the largest NIKE, Inc. store in the region. This three-story space spans over 22,000 square feet and is located on Calle Madero, in the heart of Mexico City’s Historic Center.

Where and when will the Air El Vuelo models be available?

Following a limited initial release in Mexico, the El Vuelo collection will be available worldwide starting on September 20 at jordan.com and select international retailers.

This launch reinforces the emotional bond between Nike, sneaker culture enthusiasts, and the sporting and cultural heritage of Mexico. With this collection, the brand not only honors lucha libre, but elevates it as a powerful narrative that transcends borders.
