What is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is a commemoration honoring the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Originally, the holiday was established to remember those who died during the Civil War. However, after World War I, its meaning expanded to include all U.S. military personnel who died in combat. In 1971, Congress officially designated the last Monday of May as a federal holiday to honor their sacrifice and bravery.

How is Memorial Day celebrated?

One of the most significant traditions takes place at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, where the President or Vice President of the United States delivers a speech to honor fallen service members. As part of the tribute, the American flag is flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon.

In 2000, Congress passed the National Moment of Remembrance Act, encouraging all Americans to pause for one minute of silence at 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day, in a nationwide gesture of respect and remembrance for those who gave their lives in service to the country.
