Who Is Karmelo Anthony and What Happened at the Frisco Track Meet?

Karmelo Anthony, now 18 years old, is at the center of a criminal investigation following a deadly incident earlier this year. At the time of the event, he was 17 — an age at which individuals are considered legal adults under Texas criminal law.

The incident occurred on April 2 during a track and field meet hosted by Frisco ISD at Kuykendall Stadium. During the event, a confrontation broke out between Anthony and another student, 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, which tragically resulted in Metcalf’s death by stabbing.

Why Was Karmelo Anthony Arrested and What Did He Say at the Time?

Authorities quickly apprehended Anthony at the scene. According to the police affidavit, when the arresting officer stated, “I have the alleged suspect in custody,” Anthony reportedly responded:

“I’m not alleged, I did it.”

Anthony also claimed that Metcalf had placed his hands on him after Anthony told him not to, which allegedly triggered the violent altercation.

Following his arrest, Anthony was released on a reduced bond on April 14 and has been under house arrest ever since.

What Does It Mean That Karmelo Anthony Was Indicted?

On June 18, a Collin County grand jury formally indicted Karmelo Anthony on a first-degree murder charge.

In the U.S. legal system, an indictment is a formal accusation handed down by a grand jury after reviewing evidence presented by prosecutors. It does not mean the person is guilty but signals that there is enough evidence to proceed to trial.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Anthony faces a possible sentence ranging from 5 to 99 years in prison, or even life in prison.

What Have Prosecutors and the Victim’s Family Said About the Karmelo Anthony Case?

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis confirmed that his team spent weeks gathering evidence before presenting it to the grand jury. In a statement, Willis acknowledged the deep emotional impact of the case:

“We know this case has struck a deep nerve here in Collin County and beyond. When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core. But the justice system works best when it moves with steadiness and principle.”

Willis also extended his sympathies to the family of Austin Metcalf, asking the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers.

Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s father, expressed relief that the case is progressing, though he emphasized that no legal outcome can undo his family’s loss:

“I am pleased that we are moving forward. I fully believe justice will be served for Austin Metcalf. But it will never bring my son back.”

What Is Karmelo Anthony’s Defense Team Saying?

Following the indictment, Anthony’s attorney, Mike Howard, released a video statement expressing confidence in the fairness of the legal process in Collin County.

Howard suggested that Anthony may have acted in self-defense and that the full story will come to light during the trial:

“Karmelo and his family are confident in the justice system and the people of Collin County to be fair and impartial. Of course, Karmelo looks forward to his day in court. Only in a trial can the full story be heard, and impartial justice be done.”

What Did the Frisco ISD Surveillance Video Reveal About the Incident?

In mid-June, Frisco ISD released surveillance footage from the day of the deadly altercation. The video, captured by a camera near the press box, shows activity on the field several minutes before and after the stabbing.

The camera angle does not clearly identify individuals due to the distance, but at approximately 9:55 a.m., a sudden movement is visible under a tent located near the 50-yard line in the bleachers. According to officials, this was the moment of the stabbing.

Moments later, some individuals fled the scene while others approached the area. Paramedics arrived shortly after but were unable to use a stretcher to access the bleachers. They carried medical equipment by hand to reach Metcalf.

The footage also shows police securing the area with crime scene tape and placing a blue tarp in the bleachers, where the knife believed to have been used was later found.

What Happens Next in the Karmelo Anthony Case?

Following the grand jury indictment, the case moves into the next phase of the legal process. A judge will be assigned to oversee the trial, and the first court appearance will be scheduled — though that date could be days, weeks, or even months away.

During the initial hearing, formal charges will be presented, and additional legal procedures will be outlined as the case prepares for trial.

What Are the Potential Legal Consequences for Karmelo Anthony?

If convicted of first-degree murder in Texas, Karmelo Anthony could face a minimum of 5 years in prison, with the possibility of a sentence as long as 99 years or life behind bars.

Although he was 17 at the time of the incident, Texas law treats 17-year-olds as adults within the criminal justice system, meaning Anthony will be tried accordingly.
