What is Juneteenth?

June 19 marks the end of slavery in the United States, a date known as Juneteenth. While President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, during the Civil War, not all states complied immediately.

Texas, one of eleven slaveholding states, ignored the decree for nearly three years. It wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that Union General Gordon Granger arrived at the port of Galveston, Texas, to officially announce the end of the war and that all enslaved people were free. Since then, the date has become a symbol of freedom and justice.

If June 19 falls on a Saturday, the holiday is observed on Friday; if it falls on a Sunday, it is observed on Monday. Today, Juneteenth is both a day of reflection and a celebration that honors the resilience and struggle of the African American community.

What does “Juneteenth” mean?

The name “Juneteenth” is a blend of the words “June” and “nineteenth,” the date on which it is commemorated.

How is Juneteenth celebrated?

Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth is not only a time to remember the end of slavery but also to educate all generations about Black history in the United States. Beyond reflection, it is a day to celebrate freedom, culture, and resilience.

Across many cities in the country, Juneteenth is celebrated with parades, music festivals, cultural fairs, and fireworks. It is also common for families to gather and share traditional meals, especially barbecues, in a spirit of community and pride.
