Why Will Best Buy Carry Ikea Products?

Rob Olson, Ikea US Chief Operating Officer, said this partnership aims to make functional and modern design more accessible to a wider audience. The plan includes 1,000-square-foot display areas inside Best Buy stores showcasing carefully designed kitchens and laundry rooms.

These spaces are meant to inspire visitors to transform their homes with stylish and practical solutions integrating cutting-edge technology. Customers will also receive personalized support to plan and order home decor products or electronics.

How Many Best Buy Stores Are There in the U.S.?

Currently, there are about 1,054 Best Buy stores in the United States. California has the most locations, with 146 stores.

History of Best Buy

In 1966, Richard M. Schulze and a partner founded Sound of Music, a store specializing in hi-fi equipment located in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Schulze financed the opening with personal savings and a second mortgage on his family home. One year later, Sound of Music expanded by acquiring Kencraft Hi-Fi Company and Bergo Company. In its first year, the business earned $1 million in revenue and about $58,000 in profit.

By 1969, Schulze had bought out his partner, expanded to three stores, and took the company public on NASDAQ. By 1978, Sound of Music operated nine stores throughout Minnesota. In 1981, a tornado destroyed its largest store in Roseville, prompting Schulze to hold a massive sale of damaged inventory in the parking lot, which earned more than a typical month’s revenue.

Two years later, in 1983, the company was renamed Best Buy, opened its first superstore in Burnsville, and expanded its product range to include appliances and VCRs. Today, Best Buy owns five private brands, including Insignia, which specializes in electronics.
