Who was Giorgio Armani?

Giorgio Armani was born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, northern Italy, near the Po River. He was the middle child in a modest family, with a father dedicated to maritime transport and two siblings, Sergio and Rosanna. His childhood was marked by World War II; his home was bombed and shortly after, he suffered a serious injury after stepping on a landmine that left him hospitalized for weeks with a physical and emotional scar. This experience sparked his interest in medicine and the human body.

Armani began studying medicine at the University of Milan, inspired by his own recovery and medical stories, but he abandoned the course after three years, feeling disillusioned. In 1953, he joined the Italian army and was assigned to a military hospital in Verona, where he also attended cultural events at the Arena. After leaving the army, he started working at La Rinascente in Milan, first as a window dresser and later as a buyer of men’s clothing, which allowed him to learn about international trends and establish contacts with suppliers.

In the 1960s, he was hired by Nino Cerruti to oversee the men’s line of his Hitman brand. Without formal training in fashion, he stood out for his ability to combine fabrics and comfortable styles. He met Sergio Galeotti, his future partner and business collaborator, who encouraged him to work as a freelancer. In 1974, Armani presented a leather bomber jacket in Florence, gaining his first major recognition.

How did the Armani brand come about?

The Armani brand was born in 1975, the result of the vision and talent of Italian designer Giorgio Armani and his partner Sergio Galeotti. After working as a window dresser and designer for other brands, Armani decided to forge his own path with an approach that broke traditional fashion molds. His minimalist, elegant, and timeless style quickly captured public attention, especially through his men’s suits with clean lines and precise cuts. The first collection was a huge success and marked the beginning of a new era in Italian fashion. Shortly after, the brand expanded into womenswear, also conquering women with its discreet sophistication. The Armani style not only transformed professional dressing but also became synonymous with modern luxury and refined sobriety. Today, Giorgio Armani is one of the most influential fashion houses in the world.
