Father’s Day 2024: Why Is It Celebrated on March 19th?

Father’s Day is a cherished occasion dedicated to honoring fatherhood and the influence of fathers in society. This celebration varies in date across different countries, but in many parts of the world, including Spain and some Latin American countries, it is held on March 19th.

This date coincides with the feast day of Saint Joseph, the adoptive father of Jesus, highlighting the significance of the paternal figure both in family life and in spiritual contexts.

When is the International Father’s Day?

International Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June each year. This tradition, which differs from the March 19th celebration observed in some countries, has been adopted by numerous nations around the globe. For 2024, International Father’s Day will fall on June 16th. The choice of this date aims to honor fathers worldwide, acknowledging their role within the family unit and promoting appreciation for paternal figures.

Who Invented Father’s Day?

The concept of Father’s Day was pioneered by Sonora Smart Dodd, an American woman who was inspired by her father, William Jackson Smart, a widower who single-handedly raised Sonora and her siblings after their mother’s death. Moved by her father’s dedication and sacrifice, Dodd sought to establish a day to honor fathers similarly to how Mother’s Day celebrates mothers.

Dodd proposed the idea in 1909 in Spokane, Washington, and the first Father’s Day celebration took place on June 19, 1910, in that same city. Although the idea was not immediately embraced nationwide in the United States, Dodd’s persistence, along with support from various local and national entities, eventually led to President Richard Nixon officially establishing the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day in the United States in 1972.

Since then, the celebration has gained popularity and spread across many countries, adapting to different cultures and traditions. Despite the varying dates, the essence of the celebration remains the same: to acknowledge and express gratitude for the crucial role fathers play in raising and nurturing their children.
