Where was pizza invented?
Pizza, a dish commonly associated with Italian cuisine, has roots that date back to ancient times, although its exact origin and the meaning of its name remain debated. Although records of similar foods exist from ancient times, the term “pizza” doesn’t appear in historical documents until around the year 1000, according to the Neapolitan Superintendency. An example of these documents is a text from 1195 from the Abruzzo region in Italy.
In the 14th century, the Roman Curia (the administrative and judicial organs of the Catholic Church) also referred to baked products similar to pizza, mentioning terms like “pizis” and “pissas.” Additionally, in 1535, Benedetto Di Falco, in his work Description of the Ancient Places of Naples, noted that, in the 16th century, what we now know as focaccia was called “pizza” in Naples.
By the 18th century, it was being prepared in small establishments with wood-fired ovens and sold on the streets, becoming a popular dish. These records provide some clues about the origins of pizza.
