History of Cold Stone Creamery
Cold Stone Creamery was founded in 1988 in Tempe, Arizona by ice cream enthusiasts Donald and Susan Sutherland. After traveling the world in search of the perfect ice cream and coming up short, they decided to make their own. Their goal was to serve freshly made, creamy ice cream that didn’t resemble the prepackaged options found in supermarkets or typical ice cream parlors.

From the start, Cold Stone changed the ice cream game by letting customers customize their treats. Long before other food chains offered made-to-order experiences, Cold Stone was already inviting guests to mix freshly made flavors like Cake Batter Ice Cream, Sweet Cream, Chocolate, or Cheesecake with toppings like brownies, Oreo cookies, gummy bears, Snickers, or Butterfinger.
This “Signature Creation” concept not only set a new standard in the market but also helped shape what is now known as the Cold Stone Experience. Since beginning to franchise in 1994, the brand has seen remarkable growth. In 2007, it became part of Kahala Brands, solidifying its presence in nearly 30 countries around the world.

In the United States, National Ice Cream Day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of July. In 2025, that date falls on July 20.
Why Is National Ice Cream Day Celebrated?
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan officially proclaimed National Ice Cream Day as a way to honor this beloved dessert and the U.S. dairy industry. He also declared July as National Ice Cream Month, highlighting that more than 90% of Americans enjoy ice cream as part of a tasty and nutritious diet.
The celebration not only promotes the enjoyment of ice cream during the summer but also recognizes its role in American food culture. Since then, millions of people have celebrated the day each year with their favorite flavors and festive spirit.
