The History of The Cheesecake Factory
In the 1940s, Evelyn Overton discovered a recipe in a local Detroit newspaper that inspired her to create her “Original” cheesecake. It was so well-loved that she decided to open a small bakery, although she eventually left the project to care for her children, David and Renee. Nonetheless, she moved her baking equipment to the kitchen in her basement and continued selling cakes to some of the best restaurants in town.
In 1972, Evelyn and her husband Oscar moved to Los Angeles with the hope of starting their own business. With their last savings, they opened The Cheesecake Factory Bakery and began selling Evelyn’s cheesecakes to restaurants across the city.
In 1978, their son David decided to open a restaurant in Beverly Hills to showcase his mother’s cakes. He believed that a restaurant with a menu full of desserts would be a huge success. On opening day, a huge line formed, and more than forty years later, the company continues to thrive.
