More than 45,000 Albertsons and Kroger workers could go on strike at stores under both brands. The potential labor action would affect locations from Santa Barbara to San Diego. If you’re a customer at these supermarkets, here’s everything you need to know.
When will the strike at Albertsons and Kroger begin?
The union representing these workers has not yet set a specific date for the strike; however, it could begin at any time. Despite ongoing negotiations with both companies, an agreement has not been reached. The next bargaining sessions are scheduled for June 25–27.
Why is there a strike at Albertsons and Kroger?
The primary reason behind the potential strike is the expiration of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union contract, which ended on March 2. The union also accuses both companies of unfair labor practices and alleged labor violations during the ongoing negotiations.
Seven UFCW locals, representing workers from Santa Barbara to San Diego, are currently negotiating new three-year contracts with several supermarket chains. While the full list of demands hasn’t been made public, food industry workers are seeking higher wages, improved healthcare benefits, stronger pensions, and increased staffing levels.
In a recent statement, the UFCW said it has been in talks with Kroger and Albertsons for four months, presenting proposals aimed at addressing the severe staffing shortages that they argue are impacting store operations, working conditions, and customer service.

Despite these efforts, the union claims that both companies have rejected their proposals and dismissed their concerns as mere “anecdotes,” downplaying the real challenges faced daily by workers and shoppers alike.
What are Albertsons and Kroger saying about the strike?
In response to the workers’ mobilization plans, both companies have issued statements and pledged to continue engaging in negotiations with the union.
Salvador Ramirez, spokesperson for Kroger, said the company’s current offer includes market-leading wage increases for associates throughout the contract term, along with ongoing investment in industry-leading healthcare and pension plans.
Meanwhile, Courtney Carranza, spokesperson for Albertsons, stated that the company respects workers’ rights to collective bargaining and remains committed to reaching a fair agreement for its employees.
