Who was Ricky Hatton?

Ricky Hatton was born on October 6, 1978, in Stockport, England, and grew up in the Hattersley area of Hyde with his younger brother, Matthew. Son of Carol and Ray, he was exposed from an early age to sports, as his father and grandfather had played American football in Rochdale. Although he initially showed interest in football, Hatton discovered a local boxing club that changed the course of his life. After finishing Hattersley secondary school, he worked in the family carpet business, but an accident in which he cut four fingers led him to focus on sales.

During his amateur career, Hatton stood out for his talent and discipline, winning seven British titles. He represented England at the AIBA World Junior Boxing Championship in 1996, where he was controversially eliminated in the semifinals. Years later, it was revealed that a judge had been bribed, a fact that disappointed the young boxer and prompted him to turn professional at the age of 18.

Hatton debuted as a professional in September 1997 with a technical knockout over Colin McAuley and quickly earned a spot on major fight cards, including a showcase at Madison Square Garden during a Naseem Hamed event. In 1999, he won his first international title by defeating Dillon Carew and capturing the WBO Intercontinental Light Welterweight Title. He later claimed the WBA Intercontinental title and the vacant British title against Jon Thaxton.

Between 2001 and 2004, Hatton successfully defended the vacant WBU title 15 times. His career peaked in 2005 when he stunned Kostya Tszyu, capturing the WIBF, Ring, and lineal titles, and later unified with the WBA title by defeating Carlos Maussa. That same year, he was named Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine.

In 2006, he moved up to welterweight and defeated Luis Collazo; in 2007, he returned to light welterweight to beat Juan Urango and face José Luis Castillo, recording his first count in a professional fight. Later that year, he lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr., suffering the first defeat of his career. In 2009, Manny Pacquiao knocked him out, leading to a temporary career suspension. He returned in 2012 to lose against Vyacheslav Senchenko and announced his permanent retirement.

Outside the ring, Hatton hosted “Ricky Speaks” on Nuts TV, founded Hatton Promotions, and trained boxers such as Nathan Gorman and Tommy Fury. In his personal life, he had a son named Campbell with his ex-girlfriend Claire and later maintained a relationship with Jennifer Dooley.
