After the shooting, Dowd pointed out that Kirk was a polarizing figure whose rhetoric could foster a climate of hatred. “He’s been one of the most divisive, especially divisive, younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions.”

“And I think that’s the environment we’re in. You can’t stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that’s the unfortunate environment we are in,” he said on air.

Dowd explained that his remarks were made in response to questions about the country’s political climate and reaffirmed his condemnation of any form of violence.

Dowd, who previously worked as a political strategist for President George W. Bush, joined MSNBC in 2022 after an unsuccessful campaign for Texas lieutenant governor and had nearly 15 years of experience as an analyst at ABC News. The network decided to end his employment due to the negative impact his statements had on the audience.

The situation was addressed on the program Morning Joe, where it was noted that MSNBC’s response to distance itself from Dowd’s comments was swift and firm, reaffirming the network’s commitment to media responsibility and the condemnation of violence.
