This month, some Nordstrom department store locations will close their doors as part of the company’s restructuring. If you’re a customer, here’s the list of stores included in these closures and when they will stop operating, so you can check if there’s one near you.

Which Nordstrom stores will close?

Two stores are currently scheduled for closure:

  • 1453 Saint Louis Galleria in St. Louis, Missouri
  • 20 Broadway in Santa Monica, California

So far, it has not been announced whether there will be a replacement for the Santa Monica store; however, the San Luis location will be taken over by Dick’s House of Sports.

When will the Nordstrom stores close?

The St. Louis store is expected to close on August 24, 2025, while the Santa Monica location will shut its doors two days later, on August 26.

Why will Nordstrom close its stores?

According to the company, these closures are intended to better serve customers in each region by focusing on nearby stores and digital channels. Following the closure announcement, Nordstrom committed to supporting its employees during the transition, including helping those interested in finding other roles within the company.

How many Nordstrom stores are there?

Currently, the department store company operates a total of 116 stores in the United States and Canada.

History of Nordstrom

Nordstrom began its story in 1901 as a shoe store founded by John W. Nordstrom, a Swedish immigrant who arrived in Seattle with just five dollars. Decades later, in 1971, the company went public and officially adopted the name Nordstrom, Inc.

Two years later, in 1973, the first Nordstrom Rack opened in the basement of its Seattle store as a clearance space for merchandise from its main stores. Today, the chain has become a fashion leader, offering clothing, shoes, and accessories for men, women, and children.

Its portfolio also includes more than 200 restaurants, such as specialty coffee shops, grills, and Habitant bars, along with a catalog of over 10 in-house brands designed by its internal design team.

In May 2025, Nordstrom ceased to be publicly traded after finalizing a $6.25 billion acquisition deal, led by the Nordstrom family together with the Mexican retailer El Puerto de Liverpool. As confirmed in December 2024, the family retains majority control with a 50.1% stake, while Liverpool owns the remaining shares.

What is the difference between Nordstrom Rack and Nordstrom?

Nordstrom Rack serves as the discount store for Nordstrom, where unsold or surplus inventory from Nordstrom is sold. This explains why prices at Nordstrom Rack are significantly lower. Since its creation in 1973, known as “The Rack,” the chain has expanded its presence to over 75 locations across the United States.
