The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported the market recall of a hand soap that may be contaminated with a bacterium that can cause severe health problems. We tell you which brand it is and what you should do if you bought any of them.
Which hand soap was recalled?
According to FSIS, these are soaps manufactured by DermaRite Industries, which voluntarily recalled the following products:
- DermaKleen: an over-the-counter antiseptic lotion soap for health care with vitamin E indicated for hand washing to reduce bacteria on the skin.
- DermaSarra: an over-the-counter external analgesic indicated for temporary relief of itching associated with minor skin irritations due to dry skin, insect bites, detergents, or sunburn.
- KleenFoam: an over-the-counter antimicrobial foam soap with Aloe Vera indicated for hand washing to reduce bacteria on the skin after diaper changes, after caring for sick people, or before contact with a person under medical care or treatment.
- PeriGiene: an over-the-counter antiseptic cleaner indicated for use in the perineal area.

Why was DermaRite hand soap recalled?
The affected lots were found to be contaminated with the bacterium Burkholderia cepacia, which can cause serious and potentially fatal infections. The contaminated products may be used by immunocompromised persons or those caring for them.
In healthy people with minor skin wounds, product use is more likely to cause localized infections, while in immunocompromised individuals, the infection could spread to the bloodstream, causing potentially fatal sepsis.
What should I do if I bought the recalled hand soaps?
To date, DermaRite has not received any reports of people affected by the use of the recalled products; however, it has notified its distributors and customers by email to immediately inspect available inventory and destroy all affected products.
Consumers should contact their doctor or healthcare provider if they have experienced any problems that may be related to the use or intake of this product.
