An unusual incident took place in the United States when several individuals broke into the One Stop Sales store to steal the famous Labubu figures, with the loot estimated at nearly 7,000 dollars. Criminals are no longer targeting jewelry or electronics; now, they are after these coveted collectibles, which have become some of the most desired items on social media.

The robbery occurred in the early hours of August 6, when four individuals entered the store and took several boxes of these collectible figures.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, which is investigating the case, no arrests have been made and the stolen Labubu figures have not been recovered. However, authorities did locate the Toyota Tacoma pickup truck used to commit the crime.

Labubu Robbery: What Do the Owners of One Stop Sales Say?

The store owners stated that they have worked very hard to acquire these products, which have become a trend, only for people to come in and take them as if it were nothing.

They also shared on social media a video showing the alleged masked perpetrators entering the store, taking the boxes of Labubu figures, and leaving behind significant damage to the premises.

The Origin and Evolution of Labubu

Labubu, collectible figures that have become a pop art phenomenon, were created in 2015 by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung. Inspired by Norse mythology and European fairy tales he discovered during his childhood in the Netherlands, Lung brought these peculiar creatures to life as part of his illustrated story series The Monsters.

With pointy ears, sharp teeth, and an aesthetic that blends cuteness with mischief, Labubu made its debut as a vinyl figure through a collaboration with the company How2Work. However, it was in 2019, after partnering with Pop Mart, that its popularity skyrocketed internationally.

The craze for these characters reached new heights in 2024 after they went viral on social media, thanks to celebrities like Lisa from BLACKPINK, who showcased her personal collection. Today, there are more than 300 variations of Labubu, each with unique designs that have cemented their status as icons of contemporary collecting and design.

What Is a Labubu?

Labubu is an art and design character conceptualized as a playful and endearing monster. With large eyes, prominent ears, and a distinctive smile, it has captured the hearts of collectors worldwide, becoming a highly sought-after piece both for its aesthetic appeal and artistic value.
