The Story of the Annabelle Doll

The real Annabelle doll is not made of porcelain, nor does it resemble a small girl, as depicted in the movie. It’s actually a rag doll from the Raggedy Ann line that was popular in the U.S. during the 1970s. With her sweet and harmless appearance, she might seem innocent… but she hides a dark secret that will make you want to stay far away.

In 1970, Annabelle came into the possession of a young nursing student named Donna. The doll was a gift from her mother, and Donna kept it carefully in her room. However, strange things soon began to happen.

Each day, the doll would be found in a different position. Things escalated when Annabelle started moving from room to room, and eerie notes with messages like “Help us” or “Help Lou” began appearing around the apartment. Frightened, Donna sought help from a medium, who told her the doll was possessed by the spirit of a 7-year-old girl named Annabelle Higgins, who had died in that very location.

When the doll allegedly tried to kill Lou, a friend of Donna’s, she contacted Ed and Lorraine Warren, a renowned pair of paranormal investigators. After looking into the case, the Warrens concluded that it wasn’t a human spirit possessing the doll—but a demonic entity.

Following an exorcism, the Warrens took the doll to their museum of haunted artifacts located in their home, where they locked it in a case sealed with holy water. After Ed and Lorraine passed away, the museum was left in the care of their family. Annabelle remains locked away, and a warning sign on the case advises visitors not to touch her… or face potentially deadly consequences.
