Why is National Hot Dog Day celebrated?
National Hot Dog Day is an unofficial holiday dedicated to honoring this iconic American dish. The occasion highlights the cultural and culinary significance of the hot dog, which is seen as a symbol of fast food and cherished family moments, especially during summer and sports events.
Origin of the hot dog
The hot dog has an origin that combines European traditions with American creativity. Its story begins in Germany, where frankfurter and wiener sausages were very popular. These were brought to the United States by German immigrants in the 19th century, who also introduced the custom of eating them with bread.
However, it was in the United States where the modern concept of the hot dog was born: a hot sausage served inside a long bun, ideal for eating with one hand. It is believed that the first vendor to offer this dish in its current form was Charles Feltman, in Coney Island, New York, toward the end of the 19th century. Years later, his former employee Nathan Handwerker popularized the hot dog by selling it at affordable prices under the brand Nathan’s Famous.
The name “hot dog” became common in the early 20th century, possibly inspired by the resemblance between the long sausages and dachshund dogs. Although there are different versions about the exact origin of the term, what is certain is that the hot dog established itself as a symbol of American culture, especially at sporting events, fairs, and summer celebrations. Today, the hot dog remains a simple food, yet one rich in history, tradition, and flavor.
