History of Homeland
Homeland traces its roots back to 1916, with the opening of the first United Supermarket in Sayre, Oklahoma, by HD Snell. This marked the beginning of a legacy that would lead to the brand’s incorporation into Homeland in 2008. Originally linked to Safeway, the company became independent in 1987, adopted the name Homeland in 1988, and operated independently until it faced financial difficulties.
In 2002, Homeland filed for bankruptcy and was acquired by Associated Wholesale Grocers, continuing to operate under its brand. Over the following years, the company pursued strategic expansion through acquisitions: three Country Mart stores in Lawton, Oklahoma (2004); seven and fifteen Falley’s stores in Wichita, Kansas (2005 and 2006); and seven Albertsons stores in 2007. In 2008, it strengthened its presence in Oklahoma by acquiring United Supermarkets, adding 26 locations, along with five former Albertsons stores from Williams Discount Food.
After being sold to its employees in 2011, Homeland continued growing. In 2015, it converted several stores to the Cash Saver format, which prices items at cost plus 10%. Expansion also reached Georgia in 2013, with the acquisition of 11 Belle Foods stores, mostly under the Piggly Wiggly name. Known for innovation and employee commitment, the company was named Southeastern Retailer of the Year in 2018, and in 2019 added five more stores to its network.
