What was Se-Mi’s participation like in the Squid Game 3 competition?
Se-Mi, like many other contestants, decided to join the games organized in 2024 with the desperate goal of winning money to pay off her debts.
From the moment she arrived on the island, Se-Mi proved to be a determined, brave, and strong-willed player. Unlike other participants, for her, the idea of leaving the game was far more terrifying than risking her life. This attitude caught the attention of Thanos (Player 230), leader of the group known as the Thanos Team, who offered her protection within the team, despite opposition from Nam-gyu, another team member who considered her problematic.
Early on, Se-Mi also approached Park Min-su (Player 125), with whom she formed a bond of trust. Although she was well aware that betrayal was a constant in the games, she saw Min-su as an ally who wouldn’t betray her.
During the first challenges, Se-Mi managed to survive games like Red Light, Green Light and earned the respect of her team by verbally standing up to Nam-gyu, who belittled her for being a woman. She even played a key role during the Biseokchigi game, helping her team pass the challenge.
How did Se-Mi die in Squid Game 3?
Despite her strength, Se-Mi met a tragic end, falling victim to the betrayal and violence that define the game. During the night, when the lights went out and chaos broke loose, Nam-gyu, in a brutal attack, stabbed her with a broken bottle and ended her life, despite Min-su’s desperate attempts to save her.
Her death was one of the most impactful moments of the season, not only because it marked the loss of one of the most beloved characters but also because it set the stage for the guilt and trauma that would haunt Min-su for the remainder of the episodes and until the end of Squid Game.
Although her physical presence in the competition ended with her murder, Se-Mi reappears in Min-su’s hallucinations as a symbol of his remorse and pain. In episodes like “The Starry Night”, her image haunts the protagonist, reminding him of his failure to protect her.
Particularly moving is the scene where, in his imagination, Min-su holds Se-Mi’s hand before being thrown into the void.
