History of General Mills
General Mills is a company with a rich and meaningful history that spans more than 150 years. Built on a foundation of passion for food, a drive for innovation, and a deep commitment to people and the planet, its legacy began long before becoming the global powerhouse it is today, with a presence in over 100 countries and a portfolio of more than 100 beloved brands.
The company’s roots trace back to the 19th century in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where the Washburn-Crosby Company operated a flour mill along the banks of the Mississippi River. Founded by Cadwallader Washburn, it quickly became the largest mill west of Buffalo, New York. By 1873, a larger mill was constructed to meet growing demand.

Tragedy struck on May 2, 1878, when a flour explosion destroyed the mill and claimed the lives of 18 workers. Instead of giving up, Washburn showed leadership and compassion—establishing a relief fund for affected families, rehiring all employees, and sending millers to Europe to study safer milling techniques. Upon their return, they shared their findings industry-wide, improving overall safety standards.
Washburn-Crosby’s high-quality flour soon earned international recognition, winning gold, silver, and bronze medals at a global millers’ competition in 1880. The gold-winning product was renamed Gold Medal, a brand still thriving today.
On June 20, 1928, under the leadership of James Ford Bell, Washburn-Crosby merged with several other mills, officially forming General Mills. Since then, the company has introduced iconic products like Wheaties, Bisquick, Kix, and Cheerios, while also innovating in media by sponsoring radio shows.
Over the years, General Mills has expanded into diverse sectors, including aerospace, fashion, restaurants, toys, and games. A major milestone came in 2001 with the acquisition of Pillsbury, marking the most significant merger in the company’s history. Today, General Mills continues to craft food with passion and purpose, connecting generations around the world through flavors, traditions, and trusted brands.
