When will The Last of Us season 3 premiere on Max?
So far, the streaming platform has not announced a release date for the third season of the series; however, since there was approximately a two-year gap between the first and second seasons, the third installment could arrive on Max’s catalog in 2027.
What will happen in The Last of Us season 3?
The Last of Us season 3 promises to continue developing the events introduced in the second season, which focused mainly on Ellie’s journey through Seattle. However, those who have played The Last of Us Part II know that the story doesn’t revolve solely around her. The video game is known for its dual narrative structure, alternating between the experiences of Ellie and Abby, allowing for a deeper and more balanced exploration of their personal conflicts and moral dilemmas.
Since the TV adaptation has so far prioritized Ellie’s perspective, the third season is expected to shift the focus to Abby, offering a closer look at her story, emotions, and development as a character. Her arc includes key moments such as her relationship with Owen, internal tensions within the WLF (Washington Liberation Front), and her search for redemption after encountering Lev and Yara, two young people escaping the Seraphites, a radical religious cult.
Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the video game and the series, explained that certain elements of the game were reorganized in the show to better fit the television format, including the early introduction of Abby.
On the other hand, new visual and action elements from the video game are expected to be incorporated, such as the fearsome Rat King, a monstrous infected creature that represents one of the game’s most shocking moments. Subtle details in the second season, such as the open elevator Ellie sees, already hint at its arrival.
What is the plot of The Last of Us?
The Last of Us is an American television series that debuted on January 15, 2023, on HBO. The show is inspired by the 2013 video game of the same name by Naughty Dog.

The story takes place in a world devastated by a pandemic caused by a fungus that infects humans and turns them into zombie-like creatures. Twenty years after the outbreak, Joel, a smuggler from Boston, comes across Ellie, a young girl who has the rare ability to be immune to the fungal infection.
This means that even if she’s bitten by a zombie, she doesn’t turn into one. From that encounter on, Ellie becomes Joel’s protected companion as he searches for his brother Tommy. The narrative follows Joel and Ellie’s journey from Boston to find Tommy, facing many obstacles along the way, including the constant threat of zombies.
What are the zombies in The Last of Us called?
They are named according to the stage of infection they are in:
- Stage 1: Runners. The person has just been infected and the fungus hasn’t spread throughout the body yet, so they still look human — but they’re not.
- Stage 2: Stalkers. About two weeks after infection, fungal growth becomes visible and the skin begins to peel. In this stage, the creatures lose human sounds and begin croaking.
- Stage 3: Clickers. At this point, the cordyceps has completely covered, disfigured, and destroyed the eyes and body. The infected’s heads look like giant flowers opening from their skulls.
- Stage 4: Bloaters or Shamblers. By now, the invading fungus has hardened, forming plates as protection. These creatures are slow and clumsy but far more aggressive.
