History of Marshalls
Marshalls began its journey in 1956 in Beverly, Massachusetts, founded by Alfred Marshall along with business partners Bernard Goldston, Norman Barren, and Irving Blitt. Initially an extension of a local supermarket, the store quickly evolved into the first Marshalls department store, known for offering name-brand merchandise at significant discounts.
Over the years, Marshalls saw substantial growth, and in 1995, it was acquired by TJX Companies, the parent company of TJ Maxx. This merger led to the creation of Marmaxx, now the largest off-price retailer of apparel and home goods in the U.S.
The store has gained popularity for its wide assortment of products, including clothing for men, women, and children, beauty items, home décor, seasonal products, pet toys, luggage, and more. With ever-changing inventory, each visit offers something new—making it a go-to spot for bargain hunters.
In 2019, TJX brought Marshalls into the digital space with the launch of Marshalls.com, allowing customers to shop discounted goods online from the comfort of home.
How many Marshalls stores are there in the United States?
Currently, the brand operates over 1,235 stores across 49 states and Puerto Rico. It includes both standalone Marshalls locations and combined Marshalls Mega Stores alongside HomeGoods.

History of TJ Maxx
TJX Companies, Inc. is currently one of the world’s leading retail chains specializing in fashion and home goods at low prices, and is recognized for being part of the Fortune 100 list. Its beginnings date back nearly five decades to 1976, when Ben Cammarata, then working in merchandising at Marshalls, was invited by Zayre Corp. to create a new discount store concept focused on family clothing and home products.
A year later, that concept came to life with the opening of the first TJ Maxx stores, marking the start of a new era in retail. In the late 1980s, Zayre underwent a corporate transformation that resulted in the spin-off of several brands—TJ Maxx, Hit or Miss, and Chadwick’s of Boston—leading to the creation of what we now know as The TJX Companies, Inc.
Since then, expansion has been constant. TJX has successfully introduced its low-price model in various markets and regions worldwide, not only by opening new stores but also through strategic acquisitions and the launch of new chains that connect with a wide range of consumers.
TJX’s value proposition—offering branded, stylish, and quality products at accessible prices—has earned the trust of millions of customers. This formula has positioned the company as a leader in its category.
After dedicating nearly four decades to the company he helped build, Ben Cammarata retired from his role as chairman of the board in June 2015, though he remains involved with TJX as executive advisor and founder, continuing to influence its path.
